I WORK MY WAY THROUGH THE ZOMBIES on the Strip and head for the street I spotted. Vivian’s at my back, holdin’ onto my shirt like I’m a life preserver. Every sound outta her mouth makes the muscles in my body tighten. I gotta get her outta here. No matter what.

The stink is awful. There ain’t even an ounce of clean air, and every breath hurts as rot fills my lungs. Vivian gags behind me, and even I don’t got an iron stomach. When a zombie comes within inches of my face, I heave, and the taste of puke fills my mouth.

I’m sweatin’ by the time we get to the other side, but somehow we make it. There ain’t a chance to celebrate, ‘cause there are just as many zombies on this street as there was out on the Strip. I don’t slow. I grab Vivian’s hand and keep goin’, stayin’ as close to the stores linin’ the sidewalk as I can.

After about fifteen feet, the zombies thin out. I can’t hear the screamin’ from the alley no more. Either the bastards have been put outta their misery or we’re too far away. Too bad, ‘cause that means the zombies here are more interested in us than the ones on the Strip were. And the black gunk on our clothes ain’t foolin’ ‘em.

A few come closer to check us out but lose interest when we keep movin’. It won’t last, and I know it. We’re pushin’ our luck bein’ out in the open like this.

A rotten showgirl grabs my shirt as we’re passin’ by, and my heart goes into double time. The bitch opens her mouth and screams in my face while she tries to pull me closer. Vivian stifles a scream behind me. I move my body so it’s blockin’ her, then jam my knife into the showgirl’s skull. She drops to the ground, and it draws even more of the ugly bastards our way. There ain’t as many ‘round as there was on the Strip, but they’re all suddenly very interested in us.

We gotta move.

“Run!” I yell to the others.

I tighten my grip on Vivian’s hand and take off. The zombies are everywhere. My heart pounds in tune with her heavy breathin’. After a few steps, she pulls her hand outta mine and starts hackin’ away at the zombies. It makes me sweat. After the last few days, I don’t ever wanna let go of her.

We cut our way down the street, takin’ out anything that gets in front of us. I forget about Jon and Megan. Even though I feel bad for the girl, I ain’t got a lot of respect for Jon. Vivian’s my priority. No matter what else happens, I gotta get her outta this alive. That’s all that matters.

We make it to the end of the road without losin’ anybody. There’s a small store in front of us with the door wide open, and I duck inside. Hopefully, there’ll be a back way out. We ain’t gonna make if we stay on this street.
